I wasn’t originally going to do another post about Bali itself, but after a great evening of releasing baby sea turtles, thanks to Bali Sea Turtle Society (BSTS), I will.
The BSTS is a non profit society for the protection of sea turtles. You can visit them on www.baliseaturtle.org
The whole releasing process lasts about an hour or so, this consists of a littles about the society, a briefing on how to handle the turtle and how to release them into the sea, and the easiest way to describe the location of the release is to find the Hard Rock Cafe, take the entrance into the beach there and turn left. Keep walking until you see this guy…
And you’re there! There you can see if they have any turtles to be released that day and if so, how many! We were lucky to have 200 turtles to be released that day, with children taking priority, the more turtles available the higher the chance you have of being able to release one!
Everyone queues up and you go round to collect a turtle in a plastic pot. As this is a non profit organisation, I would or suggest donating whatever you can!
Once you have your turtle, you follow “the man with the flag” down to the sea and line up all in a row. After the countdown you release the turtle on to the sand where they have a race to sea. This is the highlight of the evening, seeing 200 turtles race down towards the sea.
